For 2021 the Honda Ridgeline gets a new face, and now comes standard with iVTM-4 all-wheel drive. Is this the action truck you've been waiting for? We take a Ridgeline with some extra HPD enhancements across the Washington Overland Trail and then we hit some sloppy snow in the Cascade mountains in this comprehensive review.

I still think Honda has the best AWD system on the market today. With a good set of tires that truck would be really effective in going further if needed. Yes I said truck, and this is coming from a ZR2 owner. Honda did a great job on the Ridgeline, especially when it comes to driving and storage… I wish the ZR2 had some better storage In The door area… but then again, the ZR2 makes up for it in so many different ways especially off road, absolutely incredible.

honda makes great cars no doubt, but if you’re gonna spend $40k on a midsize truck, buy a tacoma. added bonus: in 10 years it will still be worth $30k+

I have an 18 Ridgeline and I will agree that the tires could be better. After the second bad winter we had I replaced the tires with some Michelin Defenders and now the truck is perfect for me.

Great truck and perfect for most of us who do NOT take it off road. Lets be honest, if you want a true off road truck of this size the Jeep Gladiator can't be beat. The Ridgeline though still handles wet snowy roads (shall we call it 'real world') extremely well. And the ride is buttery smooth. Looks like a winner to me.

Nice review! I really like that you took it over some rougher terrain. I am really disappointed by the interior. Compared to the Hyundai Santa Cruz, this car is really outdated. This is really an aspect that Honda needs to up their game, not just with this car. EDIT: Any plans to do a similar review (offroad) with the Hyundai Santa Cruz? Would be extremely interested to see that one put through its paces

Love your channel, I went from 6 years of owning a Tacoma, was really looking to get the 4-Runner (thanks to your review) but ended up with the 21 Ridgeline Black. Was torn between the Passport/4Runner and Ridgeline, but ended up needing a 'weekender bed' more than I need ground clearance (or back seats). Love of the new truck would be the ride handling and quietness, dual function tailgate (no more cleaning out the hinge!) and of course the trunk. Hate would be the head unit (good sound system in the Black just horrific response and performance- like, there is no way to shut off the Ridgeline and listen to the radio. You hit the Start button to turn off your truck and everything shuts off. To start the radio back up in 'accessory mode' takes about 40 seconds, I do not get it. Also, it is a bit wider than the Tacoma- not a big deal for full sized truck owners going down to the Ridgeline, but if you live in a city with tight parking/roads you will for sure feel it over a Tacoma or similar. Anyways, thanks for the great and entertaining reviews. You really helped me pick out my new truck and I still watch & learn from your vids.

Too expensive but that was really interesting. I'm always rooting for Honda, I think it did enough to handle new York winter, but at 41k that trim should have some better clearance and under cover.

The design of Ridgeline was better suited to meeting my needs than any other midsize truck. However, it has 2 fatal defects. First it is not an off-road truck, so the standard AWD only adds complexity, decreases fuel economy, and adds $3,000 to the price when compared to the completion. If you live in a snow belt then disregard that comment. Second, it has one of the last remaining interference timing belt engines. Apparently, Honda has no problem saving $10-15 per vehicle when they know every customer will spend $1,300 between 60,000 and 100,000 miles to change the timing belt and water pump. And the HPD package is more than a $3,000 option for some graphics and tire package. Try buying a Ridgeline for less than $40,000.

Nice but I preferred the distinctive look of gen 1, 2006-2014. Now they look too much like all others. I’ve owned two. Drove my 2006 for 12 years and 312,000 miles. I don’t even bother shopping anything else. Edit to add that as a professional forester/timberlands real estate broker in the South I have had to access remote and challenging terrain. Ridgeline has never let me down. Aside from that, any truck without an in bed trunk is of no interest to me.

I really like Honda but for 18 city / 24 highway, if you want to go offroading you might as well just get a Tacoma and have a real, body on frame, strong truck. My Tacoma's lifted with 31 inch all terrains and I get 21 to 22 highway and 16 to 17 city.

Thanks Ryan. Wow, a non-leather, urethane steering wheel. Dang, that is basic. Touch points are very important and you would think that Honda would put nicer materials in places you touch. A leather steering wheel, even in the base Sport trim, goes a long way. Our last 4 vehicles all had leather wrapped steering wheels, and three of the 4 had cloth seats (the 4th had leatherette). So, for me, at a minimum, I would need to go up the trim ladder to get the one with the leather steering wheel....

Yes. The additional ground clearance and shorter wheelbase make the Forester better on trails. But the V6 on the Ridgeline is much more powerful. A more similar comparison would be against an Outback XT.

Thinking of either a Ridgeline or Pilot for its torque vectoring. I own a Highlander that has it. I’m military so my wife and I get stationed anywhere, including 4 seasons or overseas where bigger vehicles simply don’t fit. Wondering how reliable the Ridgeline/Pilot are, long-lasting and if they burn oil, would reprogramming the PCV fix it? Seems common these days.

The Ridgeline is a nice crossover vehicle for people who don't need the capability of a traditional truck. The ride will be more car like, and if that's what you want I'd stay with the regular Ridgeline without the plastic body/fender cladding. All that will do is make it rust faster by holding in dirt, salt and moisture. Expensive for the performance too.

I’m not a fan of the Ridgeline but I seriously respect Honda for putting it out there. A unibody FWD/AWD with all independent suspension, in a market full of true trucks. And from what I know, everyone who buys one likes it. And they’re super reliable too. I’ll still refer to it as a sawed-off minivan but I respect it for what it is. And I’m glad they re-did the face, it was ugly as hell previously.

For the steeper downhill driving, you should have tried shifting into Sport mode. I have the 1st Gen Ridgeline, and shifting into D3 obviously helps control your speed a bit better when I go down hills. I have an Accord with the new Sport mode, and when I put it into that mode for hills (on roads, of course), it controls my speed better when I go down a hill so I don't have to press the brakes as often or as long. For the terrain you were tackling, I am sure that still would have been difficult, as you mentioned the Ridgeline is not intended for serious off-roading. I live in the desert, so for normal dirt roads, even my older version of the Ridgeline does well on them, even during inclement weather conditions or on soft sand. Although, the 1st Gen does have a bit more clearance than the current model. I am just glad they gave the Ridgeline back some individuality in it's looks again. Granted it is based on the Pilot, I have always liked it's quirky looks. When they brought it back looking exactly like the Pilot, I was disappointed. Now, it looks a bit more unique again. Great review!

I was impressed with the AWD system its really good tackling that terrain and snow. I would say it will be so much better with proper tires and it sucks to have that low ground clearance but its not and off road truck so it does not need to have one.
