Why did Mercedes' A-Class discard its revolutionary shape?!?

  • Publicat pe Acum 2 luni

    Big Car

The doo wop sound of the 40s and 50s was honed by American teenagers on street corners, trying to one-up each other to become the greatest group in town. This friendly rivalry, also seen in Chinese cafés as electronics engineers try to produce increasingly optimised circuits, is also seen in the German car industry. If Audi’s navigation system uses real-time traffic information, BMW’s system has to have it, yesterday! It was in this highly competitive environment that Mercedes tried to one-up its German rivals with the revolutionary Mercedes A-class. A false floor raised the seating height, producing the interior space of a Mercedes C-Class in something shorter than a Ford Ka. No one had done anything like this before, and the A-Class was in a class of its own. So why did Mercedes abandon this revolutionary design, going back to the same tried-and-tested shape?

I happen to drive a 2nd hand 2nd generation A170 (the car is not mine, I would not buy it anyway) and I can re-assure you, this small car can perfectly serivce a family of 2 kids, easy to drive, gentle to women, higher seating position makes it comfortable to load kids in. The baggage space is average but not bad for its category and then the back seats fall levelled which indeed turns it to a minivan. All in all it is a very smart design. However, the quality is still average even if this is the 2nd generation.. And while in the city it drives comfortably, on the highway or on slippery rural roads the driving requires a lot of attention. Seriously, this is not a forgiving car. I thought it was the tyres but putting brand new ones proved it was not them, but the car itself. Ultimately this is a a car meant to be driven female-style, i.e. slowly and without brisk turns of the wheel. Or maybe I am too used to French cars which generally drive better.

I drove a Vaneo 1.4 commercially (wheelchair transport service) for 3yrs & never had a single problem. Although performance was lackluster , i loved roominess of it. Afterwards i got a Vito. The Vito was far more economical & commercially more viable as i now could also take a stretcher & 2 wheelchairs at the same time. But i still missed the Vaneo , still do from time to time ...

This reminds me a lot about the Scion XB...designed to attract young buyers (in this case with a cooler "vibe" than the A-class) but ended up being bought by the elderly because of it´s comfort, interior space and higher driver position that made it easier to get out of the car for older drivers. It´s almost like young people just care about looks rather than comfort and practicality...oh wait they do ^^

The original class A really aged badly. The 190E/D for being 10-15 years older in infinitely much more desiderable and good looking compared to that thing. No wonder why Merccedes scrapped completly that thing instead of trying to remoderate it.

I had a sit in one in the showroom. The thing that bugged me was the steering wheel was offset towards the centre instead of being correctly lined up with the driver’s seat so you had to sit at an angle the whole time. I also took a test drive in an audi A3 diesel. It sounded and drove like a top heavy bread van. What were they thinking?

One key issue retrofitting ESP to the A Class was that it couldn't then just be fitted to A Class and S Class, but had to be fitted across the whole model range as standard. Hence it had massive implications beyond just A Class. At that time I dealt with an Austrian company making hermetically sealed electrical connectors which were used on the ESP control unit. M-Benz 'landed' at their factory asking, nay demanding, to know what was required to rapidly expand production. Their attitude was that whatever plant they wanted they could buy, whatever the cost. If time scales were too long, M-Benz would reach out to their suppliers directly, and they would use their economic power to move mountains. The whole sector was put on a near 'war' footing in a manner not seen before or since. What also has to be considered is how much M-Benz had at stake in the A Class manufacturing plant at Rastatt, a plant which I visited in the early years of production. At that time this brand new, dedicated facility was probably the most advanced car factory anywhere in the world, not only having widespread automation but also sixteen of their most significant suppliers had created new 'satellite' plants around the M-B site, these being hard-linked by conveyors into the A Class assembly plant. So the level of investment was just monumental, making the actual cost of the ESP relatively insignificant. M-Benz was ultimately willing to have a laugh at its own expense, selling A Class soft toy Elks in the visitor centre at Rastatt.

Thanks for an amazing episode! I've always been wondering about how Mercedes came up with a concept of this car in the rist place. Actually I'm quite surprised that A class with the original design had been fairly succesfull throughout 2000s since I rarely saw this car on the streets.

W168's are amazing. My parents had one of these beautiful cars when i was kid.I always enjoyed rides in it and how i loved visiting Moscow. How quiet it was,i could sleep through the whole journey! Its silver livery and aerodynamic front end had always reminded me of Silver Link, locomotive that set record in Britain in 1935(sadly wasn't preserved)so i named it Silver Link in her honour.I too remember putting shinny sticker letters of that name on the each side of the car when i was only six years old.ah,happy days.

Yet another great video, very informative and well produced :) I think however there's a bit of a boo boo at 20:50, I had to replay it to make sure I heard correctly, Infiniti is actually a luxury brand made by Nissan, not Renault :P Is it just my perception or does it look like the LCD screen on the new A class at 25:53 is a bit of an after thought? It almost looks as if they had some different design parameter in mind with the dash, but at the last minute thought about slapping in some bizarre wide LCD screen instead without really trying to mate it to the dash properly :P The E-Class looks much the same, and the panels in the S-Class look even weirder. And that weird "parcel shelf" in the A-Class (and the E-Class) on the passenger side is something reminiscent of some cars from the 50's or 60's. Actually, other bits of the dash look like something of a throwback from those decades, the huge round vents and the odd looking chrome strip beneath the centre vents looks as if it was taken out of a car from the 60's. Something just doesn't looks right with them :P I've been a fan of Mercedes Benz for a long time, but only up until the previous couple of generations of Mercedes. The latest designs almost look as if aerodynamics have taken precedence over everything else, including style and functionality, mainly with the larger sedans, that's the way I see it at least :P They used to look like the brand name had a reputation for, something with a bit of class and quality, but I'm afraid, to my mind at least, class isn't something you can associate with these new models. And from what I've seen and heard about Mercedes over the last couple of decades, quality isn't what it used to be either :P

9:56 to 10:05 is on Chapmans Peak in Cape Town, South Africa. A most beautiful mountain drive that drops right down into the sea on the right hand side (in direction blue car is travelling). Interestingly, a Mercedes W123 driver went over the edge and fell 80 meters, coming to a rest just above sea level. There is a YouTube video detailing the whole event and Mercedes in South Africa used it in their adverts. To see the advert, see video with title: Chapman's Peak, de Sonnenberg Murphy Leo Burnett Johannesburg, Mercedes Benz, 1991. It's a long title (name of the advertising agency), but key in some of the words to find it. To see the full story behind the advert, see the video titled: Mercedes-Benz Revisits Chapmans Peak Crash Site After 30 Years. This video contains images of the wreck lying on the rocks below. PS: I have driven this beautiful pass more than a hundred times, mostly in a Mercedes-Benz W108, W123, W116, W180 & W126.

to be fair it is has the largest sense of interior and cargo space of a vehicle in it's overall length class. The rear seat backs can be propped up to increase boot space or completely removed, including the boot cover lid. Peerless. It is only 3.58m long. That's smaller than a renault zoe, and about the same size as the Kia Picanto, Fiat 500 basic or Seat Mii which are all absolutely tiny. Mercedes have not made anything as good as the W168 in tardis-like ability (Tardis = the words of my local Mercedes dealer). Mercedes have no qualm in making ugly cars like the B class or GLB - why not keep the A class.

Non-conventional shapes rarely have success in Germany. Even the Audi A2 was not a commercial success, though nowadays it is much sought after as a used car. The original A-class will experience something similar, I guess. It must also be said that Mercedes didn’t quite put heart and soul into their non-conventional products. This reflects in their failure with both the A-Class and the entire Smart series.

How t.f. to even compare first gen A-class vs. A3 of the same first generation? That A class was a GARBAGE unable to show XX century dynamic performances in ANY motorisation which existed back then. Those 80kilos lighter are nonsense, as the A3 could be bought even equipped with AWD and 180bhp version of the 1.8turbo 20v. for A classe is nothing even comparable with those, more than that, ALL a-classe motorisations are even weaker than 110bhp DIESEL vp37 from A3 😂😂😂. The 190E wasn't a large luxury car though. It was an entry level car that got wildly successful due to it's affordability and good economy at the time. It was so good in fact, that even today it makes up a respectable portion of used cars on the roads here in germany no matter if east or west. I myself had the pleasure to own a W126 S-Class which, at the time, was also made more widely available to the middle class. It may have been a different story in the US though
